Cultivating Faith and Simplicity: Lessons from the Garden

There’s something sacred about working in the soil—digging deep with your hands, feeling the earth between your fingers, and planting something with the hope that it will grow. Gardening is more than just an act of cultivating plants; it’s an act of faith. It’s a reminder that the most beautiful things in life take time, patience, and trust in something greater than ourselves.

Each season, I prepare my garden with intention, selecting seeds with hope and expectation. Some sprout quickly, eager to push through the surface and reach toward the light. Others take their time, hidden beneath the soil, working quietly in the dark before they’re ready to emerge. Isn’t that so much like life? Like faith? We plant, we water, we wait. Sometimes we see the fruits of our labor almost instantly, and other times, we’re left wondering if anything is happening at all.

But here’s the truth—growth is always happening, even when we can’t see it.

God works in seasons, and He works in the waiting. Just as a seed must break open in the soil before it can grow, sometimes we, too, have to go through unseen seasons of transformation before we flourish.

The Beauty of Simplicity in the Garden and in Life

Gardening has become a way for me to embrace a simpler life, one where I focus on what truly matters. It’s a practice of stewardship, a way to care for what I’ve been given without striving for more than I need. In the same way, living with faith and simplicity isn’t about having a perfect home, a flawless routine, or checking off an endless to-do list. It’s about being present, making room for what brings peace, and trusting that God provides exactly what we need in each season.

Lessons from the Garden for Our Faith

There are so many spiritual lessons in tending a garden, but here are a few that have deeply shaped my heart:

  1. Good things take time. We can’t rush growth—whether it’s in a garden or in our faith. Just as plants need time to root and strengthen before they can bear fruit, we also need time to grow into the people we’re meant to be.

  2. Seasons are necessary. There is a time for planting, a time for growth, and a time for harvest. But there’s also a time for rest. Even in the stillness of winter, when everything seems barren, life is being restored beneath the surface. The same is true for us—we need seasons of stillness and trust to prepare for what’s ahead.

  3. We must tend what we plant. A thriving garden requires care—watering, weeding, pruning. Our faith and our lives are no different. If we want to cultivate a strong spiritual foundation, a peaceful home, and a heart full of joy, we must be willing to tend to them with care and consistency.

  4. God provides. I’ve never had a garden season where something didn’t grow. Even when things didn’t go as planned, when plants struggled or crops were smaller than expected, something always thrived. God is always at work, always providing, always bringing new growth—even if it looks different than we expected.

Planting Seeds of Faith and Simplicity

At Simply Korena, my heart is to encourage women to embrace the journey of faith and simple living, just as I’ve learned to do in my own life. You don’t have to have it all figured out before you start. You don’t need to wait for the “perfect” season. Whether you’re planting an actual garden, nurturing your faith, or creating a home that feels warm and intentional, it all begins with a single step—a single seed planted in faith.

So take that first step. Start small. Trust the process. And know that, in time, beauty will bloom.
